Jack Reacher (2012, PG-13)
Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike Novelist Lee Child’s 6’5” drifter/vigilante with an ironclad sense of justice is played by the not-6’5” Cruise in a slam-bang actioner that is more generic than genuine fun. (Also on iTunes) C+

Safe Haven (2013, PG-13)
Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, Cobie Smulders Surprise! It’s a Nicholas Sparks adaptation about two good-looking people who fall deeply in love but are kept apart by a contrived obstacle straight out of a soap opera. And you say Hollywood is unoriginal. D

The Oranges (2012, R)
Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Adam Brody, Leighton Meester Laurie (House) plays a suburban dad who has an affair with the twentysomething daughter of his best friends in this charming but not entirely successful dramedy. (Also on iTunes) C+

Band of Outsiders (1964, Not Rated)
Anna Karina, Sami Frey, Claude Brasseur Jean-Luc Godard’s Gallic romp gets a Criterion Blu-ray upgrade. A-

The Great Escape (1963, Not Rated)
Steve McQueen, James Garner The POW prison-break classic is now available on Blu-ray in honor of its 50th anniversary. A-
