Few novelists write as well as John le Carré, regardless of genre. He can nail a character in a telling phrase: Consider the ambitious pol in Britain’s Foreign Office with ”quick, greedy eyes in a pugilist’s face.” It’s no shock to learn that this fellow launches a counterterrorist operation of highly dubious legality in Gibraltar — the surprises come in seeing how far his golden-boy chief aide will go to expose the conspiracy. Le Carré drops topical warnings about the outsourcing of military and intelligence matters to private contractors, but mostly A Delicate Truth is a ripping, fun yarn. A-
