A GOOP gaffe or just more Gwyneth bashing? Paltrow draws criticism for selling a bikini for little girls
Being the world’s most hated celebrity is no day at the beach, just ask Gwyneth Paltrow.
Critics panned her gluten-free, sugar-free cookbook and almost split their pants when she released a list of fashion must-haves totaling almost half a million dollars, now Paltrow’s in hot water for selling a bikini designed to be worn by four to eight-year-old girls.
A child protection agency in Britain is has blasted the Iron Man 3 actress for selling a two-piece swimsuit designed for little girls. Created by swimwear designer Melissa Odabash, the limited-edition bikini is available exclusively from Paltrow’s GOOP Collection, the e-commerce branch of her lifestyle brand goop.com.
Claude Knight of Kidscape, told Britain’s Daily Mail that the advocacy group has concerns about the suit, which features a ruffle-embellished triangle top and string tie bottom, and is sized to fit 4, 6, and 8-year-olds. “We remain very opposed to the sexualization of children and of childhood. The dangers have been discussed at length, so it is a great pity that such trends continue and that they carry celebrity endorsement.”
A spokesperson for Paltrow called the criticism “absurd,” since “two-piece bathing suits have been worn by young girls for decades.” Good point.
This might be a different discussion if the kiddie model was striking a seductive pose — like Gwynnie’s friend Beyoncé does in her new H&M campaign — but GOOP’s bikini baby looks like a typical kid on a family vacation.
Paltrow, who is the mother of an 8-year-old daughter, also offers two Odabash bikini styles for women, so it seems more likely that she was trying to create a mommy-and-me fashion moment.
