Broadway box office: An Easter bounce for 'Cinderella' and 'Motown'
The Easter Bunny brought a special treat to Broadway last week, with overall grosses up 24 percent for the week ending March 31, according to figures from the Broadway League. With a deluge of tourists in New York City for the springtime holiday season, virtually every show saw a sizable bunny-hop in sales (and far less discounting than usual). Wicked and The Lion King both topped $2 million in grosses for the week, while 11 other shows crossed the $1 million threshold.
Among the week’s Million Dollar Club were three new-this-season productions: Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella ($1.4 million), the Tom Hanks-led drama Lucky Guy ($1.25 million), and Motown: the Musical ($1.16 million). That’s the third consecutive $1 million-plus week for Motown since it began previews, a record for a brand-new show opening cold on Broadway (without a previous production Off Broadway or out of town).
For other frosh on the Main Stem, the news was less encouraging. Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in its first full week since its March 20 opening, saw a modest uptick to $411,052 — still just 46 percent of its potential gross in the Cort Theatre. And while receipts for Trey Anastasio’s musical Hands on a Hardbody climbed 52 percent the week after its March 21 premiere, the total was just $321,043. That’s an anemic 30 percent of the show’s potential earnings and reportedly below its weekly operating costs.
Aside from Lucky Guy, whose box office dipped a bit last week (probably because some tickets were set aside for critics to review the show before its official premiere tonight), only one other show failed to feel an Easter bounce: Ann, whose box office dropped 21 percent to $286,869 and played to houses that were less than half full.
