Bates Motel, A&E’s new show that serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, has no shortage of the unsettling, the creepy, and the disturbing.

One source of show’s terrors is the sketchbook a young Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) finds hidden under the carpet of one of the motel’s rooms. Inside is Chinese writing and manga-style drawings of women being tortured. Norman and classmate Emma Decody (Olivia Cooke) soon find that the sketches lead to a bigger mystery that will come into play in upcoming episodes.
