'The Vampire Diaries': Greatest TV Couple of All Time

In honor of March Madness, EW is launching a tournament to determine the Greatest TV Couple of All Time. But before we can finalize the brackets, we are turning to you, our hopeless TV romantic readers, to decide which five couples — all part of a love triangle on their respective shows — make it out of a qualifying round to fill the final slots. Today, we’re debating Stefan & Elena versus Damon & Elena on The Vampire Diaries.

It’s the age-old tale of two brothers, one girl, a whole lot of lust. Blood lust actually. In the Vampire Diaries world, the only thing that can come between Salvatore brothers Stefan and Damon is Mystic Falls’ very own doppelgänger, Miss Elena Gilbert. And it just so happens that between the brothers is where Elena tends to stay (and we can’t blame her). Elena has perfected the art of choosing one Salvatore, only to change her mind episodes later. To be fair, she doesn’t have an easy decision. I mean, have you seen those two?

If you have, then you should understand why we can’t choose between them. We love Damon’s blue eyes and snarky comments just as much as we love Stefan’s green eyes and brooding ways. But in order to determine the Greatest TV Couple of All Time, a choice has to be made. Put yourself in Elena’s shoes: Stelena or Delena.

When The Vampire Diaries kicked off, Elena was a high schooler who had just lost her parents and wasn’t looking for a new man in her life. But when Stefan Salvatore and his perfectly coiffed hair arrived in town, she couldn’t help but be drawn to him. An instant attraction quickly turned into true love, and despite numerous flirtations (and even a kiss or two) with his older brother, Elena always seemed to choose Stefan… until she, well, died.

After Elena became a vampire, this tricky little thing called a sire bond helped her decide to act on her feelings for Damon. They’ve been together (and partaking in very hot morning sex) ever since. So which ship do you support? Personally, I love Stefan’s sarcasm and adorable “I love you’s” just as much as I love Damon’s dance moves and passionate motel make-out sessions. Although I think that Stelena is endgame, I think that Damon, at certain times in Elena’s life, is what’s best for her. Yes, I stole that from Rose, but sometimes, you just have to listen to a ghost. And can I also just say that I’m in support of Team Elijah? I mean, he’s pretty and moral and his last name isn’t Salvatore, but I digress.

Back to the task at hand: Which of the Salvatore-Gilbert pairings deserves to be a contender for the Greatest TV Couple of All Time? Stefan was able to resist compulsion because he loved Elena so much, but Damon says things like “I want to throw you back in my bed and never let you leave.” So, do you side with Klaus and Caroline (and just about everyone else in Mystic Falls) on team Stelena, or are you all about the forbidden love and passion of Delena?
