Call her the anti-Madonna.

Alt-folk singer Michelle Shocked has come a long way since her days as a ’90s college radio staple and Lilith Fair regular; the now born-again Christian took many by surprise on Sunday when she launched into an anti-gay hate rant at a concert — and in San Francisco, of all places.

It all went down at Yoshi’s, a venue that SFist says had been touting Shocked as “the most sophisticated hillbilly you ever met.” (Shocked’s Facebook page, meanwhile, describes her as “your average anarchist skateboard punk rock born again Christian.”)

But none of that prepared the crowd for her comments on stage, which effectively cleared out the venue once offended concertgoers realized what was going on. Details of her speech’s contents are still unclear — at first, many apparently thought it was a joke until it became obvious Shocked was being sincere — but many took to Twitter to live tweet the hateful portions of her performance.

Among the tweets from the scene:

“she said gay marriage would cause the end of the world” — @anile02

“wow, she’s a total bigot and said so on stage. It was unreal. We had to leave. I am so disappointed.” — @lisahubbert

“I don’t really know what’s going on with Michelle Shocked, but I really hope it’s a mental breakdown of sorts.” — the1percentgirl

But the tweeters were just doing as instructed. Shocked reportedly ended her rant by telling the crowd, ”You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.'” Reps for Shocked could not be reached for comment.
