The Academy wasn’t the only one doling out trophies this past week. On Feb. 21, the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood event honored 9-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis with the Breakthrough Performance award and Oprah Winfrey with the Power award. (Essence, like EW, is part of Time Inc.) Next up, at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Feb. 23, Silver Linings Playbook won Best Feature, while the film’s star (and eventual Oscar winner) Jennifer Lawrence took home Best Female Lead and Magic Mike‘s Matthew McConaughey nabbed Best Supporting Male. “I think six of the last seven films I’ve done were independent,” he told reporters. “And I’ve had the best, most creative past two years of my working life.” That same night the annual celebration of cinematic awfulness, the Razzie Awards, gave The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 seven awards, including Worst Picture. The injured Kristen Stewart was further hobbled with a Razzie for Worst Actress. Perhaps not surprisingly, she opted not to collect the…honor.
