Megan Fox as April O'Neil in TMNT -- A great choice for the role
Many fans aren’t pleased with the decision to cast Megan Fox as April O’Neil in Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. And while the actress is known for her controversial quotes and sexy physique, Fox can definitely pull off the role of the Turtles‘ sidekick. Here’s why I think Fox is the right choice.
First: Put aside the images you have of her as a pouty pinup leaning of the hood of a car, and remember the scene in Transformers when she says to Bumblebee “I’ll drive, you shoot.” The girl gets involved. She easily could’ve been a prop, but the reason Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky liked her was because she wasn’t afraid of breaking a nail. She gets up close and personal with the action — a trait of a successful journalist, which is one of April O’Neil’s more famous professions. She is often seen running through the sewers along with the turtles on adventures or battling against the evil Shredder.
Second: Spare me the complaints that she is too sexy. April is, admittedly, more of a quirky-cute than a typical beauty — she usually has short hair and wears a pair of frumpy boots. But have you seen the illustrations of April in the comic? She’s all curves. She has Joan Holloway’s body. Tell me that’s not intentional. I would venture that Megan Fox is actually more realistically proportioned than April O’Neil as imagined by several of the men who have drawn her. Of course, we’ll have to see how Bay and co. decide to outfit Fox — will she be in the iconic yellow? Or will she get a modern, slightly less garish wardrobe update?
Third: Everyone knows Fox loves geek culture. An avid fan of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, comic books and Halo, Fox respects the roles that fans play in these cult followings. She’s one of them! And she will consider that in her portrayal of the famous girl-amongst-the-Turtles, while still bringing her own brand of sexy sassiness to the part.
And finally: The look and role of the character has altered through the canon of the Turtles — she has been a computer programer, a shopkeeper, a ninja, an archeologist and even a turtle herself. However, in whatever role portrayed by whatever actress she remains an integral part of their endeavors. And that’s what is important. I don’t doubt that Fox will be give us a capable, independent April O’Neil. Plus, she’s already proven that she works well as a part of a team of aliens. (In case you hadn’t heard, the boys are now alien turtles, not mutant ones.)
I think the great thing about such a vast universe incarnations is that there is no right answer. There is the familiar answer — but that depends on your age and whether you grew up with the comics or the television series or the original movies. So let’s just calm down, sit back and relax with some extra cheesy pizza.
