'Doctor Who' origins movie finds its Patrick Troughton
- TV Show
Reece Shearsmith has been cast as actor Patrick Troughton in the TV movie An Adventure in Space and Time, which details the creation of Doctor Who. Troughton was the second actor to play the Time Lord in the long-running time travel show, taking over the role from William Hartnell in 1966. As previously announced, Harry Potter actor David Bradley has been cast as Hartnell.
Shearsmith is best known for appearing in the amazingly bizarre British sitcom The League of Gentlemen alongside An Adventure… screenwriter Mark Gatiss. “I first asked Reece about 12 years ago when I started thinking about this project,” Gatiss told Britain’s Radio Times. “We were in the midst of League of Gentlemen and I just remember thinking, if anyone plays Patrick Troughton, it should be Reece. Like the second Doctor, he’s small, saturnine and a comic genius.”
You can see behind-the-scenes footage from An Adventure in Space and Time and a League of Gentlemen episode below. The current season of Doctor Who will resume on BBC America March 30.
