Oscars Fashion: What is the most worn designer label in the last 15 years?
“Who are you wearing?”
It may sound like a silly question, but there’s more at stake than just making the best dressed list — or staying off the worst dressed list — at the Academy Awards. The kind of publicity generated by a picture of a high-profile actress in a designer gown is so precious that stories abound of fashion brands offering cash, endorsement deals and other incentives in exchange for a star’s loyalty on Oscar night.
But it’s not likely that we’ll ever hear Ryan Seacrest ask “Why are you wearing that?” so let’s turn our attention back to the who.
In the last 15 years of Oscars red carpets, one designer name has been the answer to the question “Who are you wearing?” more times than any other. Who is it?
According the The New York Times‘ Red Carpet Project, that would be Versace.
By the Times‘ count, 34 A-list women have worn gowns by the Italian label to the Academy Awards since 1997. Angelina Jolie, Heather Graham and Faith Hill have worn Versace to two different Oscars ceremonies, while both Hilary Swank and Catherine Zeta Jones have pulled a Versace three-peat.
Rounding out the list of the top 5 most worn designer labels at the Oscars over the last 15 years are: Valentino (20), Christian Dior (18), Vera Wang (16), and Chanel (14).
