Given the monster success of AMC’s The Walking Dead, it’s surprising the gore-soaked series hasn’t yet spawned a proper survival-action videogame. Sure, Robert Kirkman’s flesh-eating franchise has inspired strategy and social games, as well as Telltale Game’s absorbing character-driven point-and-click adventure, but none of these entries have allowed first-person shooter fans to waste walkers from behind the iron sites of a hand-cannon.

This glaring oversight will be remedied next month when Activision unleashes The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Serving as a prequel to the TV series, Survival Instinct stars fan-favorite backwoods brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon (voiced in-game by Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker, respectively.) While players will drop walking corpses—and cranky one-liners—from behind Daryl’s crossbow, they’ll also be joined throughout the adventure by his psycho sibling. When not piling undead creeps like cord wood, players will need to scavenge supplies, seek shelter, and generally do whatever it takes to survive.
