'Amazing Spider-Man 2' starts filming: Read the synopsis, see pictures from the set
Last year’s teenybopping reboot The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $750 million at the global box office, which made it the 7th-highest-grossing movie of 2012. (It’s also the lowest-grossing movie ever made with Spider-Man in the title, but hey, have any of your movies made $750 million?) Thus, the sequel, currently titled The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has commenced filming. Columbia Pictures announced that the movie will be the first in the franchise filmed entirely in New York State, which means all the greenscreens will be authentic New York product, not like those fake Los Angeles greenscreens — which might look greener, fine, but that’s just because they go to the gym more often.
In a press release, Columbia revealed the plot for the reboot-sequel:
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
Let’s take this one at a time:
High school graduation can’t come quickly enough: We already knew that the sequel was doubling down on the schoolyard setting, with Dane DeHaan and Shailene Woodley joining the cast as
James Franco and Kirsten Dunst Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson. But if the movie is actually structured around the end of the year, just think of the setpieces! The chances just shot up of there being an extended dance number/action sequence during prom.
But that’s a promise he just can’t keep: “Listen, Captain Stacy, I know I promised you in your dying moments that I’d stay away from your daughter. But, like, have you seen your daughter?”
A new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx) emerges: This seems to confirm that Electro was the mysterious darkened figure who appeared at the end of Amazing Spider-Man mumbling something about Peter Parker’s father. Presumably, this version of Electro will have some kind of tie to OsCorp, which is quickly becoming the Massive Dynamic of the Amazing-verse. (Don’t forget: Amazing 2 is being co-scripted by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Jeff Pinkner — three of the main creative forces behind Fringe.) The synopsis notably doesn’t mention the Rhino, even though Paul Giamatti was reportedly in talks to play the rampaging villain. But maybe the movie’s real villain is hormones.
An old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) returns: Interesting. Harry Osborn wasn’t mentioned in the first movie. By referring to him as an “old friend,” could it be that Peter and Harry were very young childhood friends, back when Peter’s parents were still around? And could this mean we’ll get a look at Harry’s dad, Norman?
Peter uncovers new clues about his past: Many more scenes of Peter doing his best Mohinder Suresh impression and screaming “Who killed my father?” Unless maybe it turns out that — random, baseless theory alert! — in the Amazing-verse, Peter is actually the son of Norman Osborn?
To further tease our interest, returning director Marc Webb tweeted a couple pictures from the set. They aren’t particularly revelatory, but they offer definitive proof that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is absolutely a movie that is happening. Check out the pictures below:
