If you happen to channel surf past CBS and catch an image of Jack Lord in the next few days, the answer is no — the network hasn’t reduced itself to airing old reruns of Hawaii 5-0.

Instead, it’s using old video of the classic TV star to help promote Monday’s episode of Hawaii 5-0, a reboot of an old episode from 1973 called “Hookman.”

“It was very important for us to get the word out that this was a remake and from day 1 we’ve been discussing with our execs how to incorporate the original. That included promos and DVD extras,” Executive Producer Peter Lenkov told EW. “Our reboot shares the same DNA. I’d love for those who aren’t aware to know that there were 12 great years of the original Five-0 before we ever existed.”

Even better, the decision to use vintage footage of the old McGarrett didn’t seem to threaten the new one. “Alex [O’Loughlin] was a fan of Jack Lord, so any comparisons would be considered a compliment.”

Here’s the promo. (“It’s bang bang time!”)
