Cinderella gets a new pair of (designer) glass slippers for her Broadway debut
The Broadway musical based on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella begins previews tonight, with Tony nominee Laura Osnes slipping into the title character’s famous footwear.
To mark the occasion, Stuart Weitzman custom-designed new glass slippers — or, more accurately, polyvinyl-chloride pumps — for the fairytale heroine.
Working with Cinderella costume designer William Ivey Long, Weitzman created a pair of two-and-a-half-inch see-through heels and bedazzled them with Swarovski crystals so that they can be seen by every member of the audience, even those seated in the rows furthest from the stage.
“When it comes to creating new designs, the highest inspiration, excitement and reward comes when the result can be enjoyed by every girl,” says Weitzman, who will begin selling a version of the glass slippers (priced at $575) in his US stores next month. “Cinderella’s shoe is the epitome of that.”
This isn’t the first time Weitzman has been inspired by the rags-to-riches storybook character.
The shoe designer sold his first pair of transparent pumps, dubbed the Exposé, in 1975. In recent years, he’s made one-of-a-kind, diamond covered heels for stars to wear to the Academy Awards: In 2002, three bodyguards escorted actress Laura Harring — wearing a pair of sandals decorated with 464 Kwiat diamonds — down the red carpet, while 2004 Best Song nominee Alison Krauss attended the ceremony wearing a pair of 595-carat shoes valued at $2 million.
