Black made a comeback on the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes, but Nicole Kidman and Helen Mirren were the only ones who really got it right.

Kidman worked the sheer-and-solid trend in an Alexander McQueen gown with a studded neckline and mesh paneled waist. She kept her jewelry — earrings, bangles and a cocktail ring, all by Neil Lane — and her hair and makeup simple, letting her dress do all the talking.

Mirren could (and should) give a master class on how to dress your age and still look hot on the red carpet. Like Kidman, the 67 year-old actress also went edgy, minus the peek-a-boo waist and with the addition of a couple of sleeves. Mirren stood out from the crowd of pale frocks in her midnight Badgley Mischka gown, embellished with gold beading and an embroidered belt effect.

Both Oscar winners wore dresses that are best described as warrior chic, so we’re pitting them against each other in a head-to-head red carpet fashion battle.
