The year is 2072, 60 years after an alien race attacked planet Earth. Now, says Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy), ”humanity is preparing to resettle on a moon of Saturn.” Tom Cruise’s character, drone technician Jack Harper, is left behind to extract vital resources from Earth. He thinks he’s alone — until he encounters a woman (Olga Kurylenko) and discovers he’s far from it. Inspired by science-fiction films Kosinski watched in his youth, like Solaris and La Jetée, Oblivion is based on a graphic novel he wrote in 2005. And by filming on location in Iceland, the director says he takes ”science fiction out of the dark and back to the sunshine…. It’s a very different apocalyptic world than we’re used to seeing,” he says. ”It’s not brown and dusty. There’s beauty to it.”
