Contrary to his name, the Lone Ranger has never been a one-man posse: Tonto has shared the trail since the masked man’s first radio adventure aired 80 years ago. The partnership resumes this summer, when Disney releases Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger — with Johnny Depp playing Tonto to Armie Hammer’s Lone Ranger. Verbinski liked the chemistry between Depp’s eccentric nomad and Hammer’s unsubtle lawman, and he says the actors had some real-world material to mine, too: ”They couldn’t really be more different. It’s one of those situations where their offscreen friendship is as much The Odd Couple as when they are on screen together — something we were hoping for.”
