Like his previous film, District 9, which used its extraterrestrial crustaceans as stand-ins for a variety of oppressed classes, director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium has more on its mind than just ray guns and UFOs. The sci-fi thriller finds Matt Damon and Jodie Foster living in a future where the 1 percent reside in a luxury space station while the rest of Earth suffers. ”Neither film really has a ‘message,’ ” Blomkamp says. ”It’s more like looking at a real-life situation, just with a sci-fi veneer.”
