Premieres: January 8, 10PM, TBS

When the third season of Cougar Town on ABC was delayed, the cul-de-sac crew began a grassroots campaign to let the world know about the little comedy (with the unfortunate name) that could. Just when it seemed like season 3 would be the final chapter in the saga of Jules Cobb and her wine-loving friends, TBS gave the series new life by picking up a 15-episode fourth season. Star and executive producer Courteney Cox talked to EW about the show’s new home … and the possible demise of a beloved character. (Gasp!)

What’s the biggest difference in the show now that you’re on TBS?
I think it’s funnier this year. We’ve got to be a little racier. We have a little more freedom…. Even their promos are about us being alcoholics. [Laughs] They’re more comfortable with making jokes about things that are more serious on the networks.

What’s going on with Jules and Grayson [Josh Hopkins] now that they’ve tied the knot?
We’re just dealing with everyday married life. To try to keep the sexual part alive, we have naked day, where we have to spend the whole day naked. We’re dealing with real-life issues, heightened with comedy.

And what’s everyone else up to?
At the end of the [last] season we were starting to deal with the relationship between Travis [Dan Byrd] and Laurie [Busy Philipps]. In one episode [this season] the guys are trying to mentor Travis in how to be a player. We find out that he really is a nerd, and he’s got to go his own route.

How do you feel about Travis and Laurie’s will-they-or-won’t-they relationship?
I’m torn. There’s a part of me that really wants to see it. I just know that whatever’s going to happen, the very last part of the finale will be the right thing. There will be some payoff.

I hear Shirley Jones is moving into Grayson’s old house in the cul-de-sac. Is she going to become part of the crew?
She’s welcomed, but I don’t know how that will play out. When we’re at the cul-de-sac, I’m sure we’ll see her.

What other guests visit?
Ali Wentworth. She’s really funny. She plays Tom’s [Bob Clendenin] girlfriend. He might be on the up-and-up.

Does Barb show up at all?
No, but I’m not saying she won’t. She’s really funny, but she’s tied in to the ”cougar” part of it, and we didn’t focus on the cougar aspect of our show.

Any inside jokes to look forward to?
We always change the meanings and phrases of the English language. If you’ve ”slept like a baby,” it means you’ve slept horribly because they wake up all during the night. And ”junk in the trunk” means emotional baggage.

How is Jules’ favorite wine goblet, Big Lou, faring?
I actually just did a scene with Big Lou. But Big Lou may not make it. That’s a bigger spoiler than anything!
