'Sofia the First' talks gender equality in premiere episode: EXCLUSIVE VIDEO AND PHOTOS
Following a stellar franchise launch last year with a hit TV movie, the Disney Channel’s new series Sofia the First is set to debut next week with an episode about guess what: gender equality. In the premiere episode, “Just One of the Princes” (Friday, January 11 at 9:30 a.m., ET/PT), Sofia wants to become the first princess to earn a spot on her school’s flying derby team. Even though she’s paired with the overly-anxious horse Minimus (voiced by Ariel Winter’s “Modern Family” co-star Eric Stonestreet), Sofia learns to believe in herself and proves that a princess can do anything she sets her mind to.
In the video below the boys and girls of Enchancia give her the lay of the land when she shows up to try out.

In the upcoming “The Buttercups” episode, Sofia’s new step-father, the king of Enchancia, sends royal steward Baileywick along to help Sofia when she goes on a hike with her Buttercup troop, but as any self-respecting steward would, Baileywick insists on doing everything for Sofia (even the challenges that she is supposed to do on her own in order to earn Buttercup Badges). When Baileywick runs into a little trouble himself, Sofia uses her Buttercup skills to help him and in turn proves that even princesses are capable of doing things for themselves.
In an episode titled “Cedric’s Apprentice,” Sofia becomes apprentice to Cedric the Royal Sorcerer (Jess Harnell, Doc McStuffins) and goes out of her way to help him impress the king with a new magic trick. In the process of working together, Cedric and Sofia form a lasting friendship and the crafty sorcerer puts aside his quest to steal Sofia’s amulet in order to take over the kingdom… at least temporarily.
