'Downton Abbey' star Dan Stevens crowned Britain's best-dressed man by GQ
British GQ has released its annual list of Best Dressed Men in Britain 2013 and the most dapper man of this new year is (drumroll please)… Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens. Yes, he of the aquamarine eyes and swoon-worthy sideburns has beat out favorites like David Beckham and Prince William to land at the top of the list.
While we certainly have no qualms with Matthew Crawley being named top dog (he sure looks good in uniform, doesn’t he?), the list — comprising 50 people in all — did contain a number of surprises and, well, outright misfires. Take a look at GQ’s full gallery here, then see if you agree with our objections (and additions) below!
Here are a few things we raised an eyebrow at that made (or didn’t make!) the list:
— Grayson Perry: Chunky magenta platforms + mustard laces ≠
Look, we understand that the mission is to “celebrate the whole spectrum of style.” But Grayson Perry’s colorful ensemble — featuring bright blue tights, a quilted dress, and orange eyeshadow — isn’t fashionable in any century, let alone deserving of a best dressed nomination.
— David Beckham: Number 36?
So the soccer star is a bit of a tired fashion icon. That doesn’t mean he should be behind Richard Ayoade, Eddie Redmayne, and Bill Nighy. That is, unless you like him best un-dressed.
— Where is Gandalf the Grey?
Few men can rock a salmon cardigan like Sir Ian McKellan did this year at Comic-Con. Surely he deserves at least some place on this list.
— And how about Superman?
Man of Steel star Henry Cavill might not quite be in the public eye just yet, particularly in America, but he spent four years on Showtime’s The Tudors. Shame on you, British GQ, for forgetting your own history! P.S.: We dare you to watch this perfume ad and not want to spontaneously combust. Cavill makes a suit look fiiine.
— Prince Charles over Prince William?
And it wasn’t even like he beat him by two or three spots. No, Prince Charles is a full 29 spots ahead of Prince William, coming in a plummy number 8. In what world is Prince Charles ever better dressed than dreamy father-to-be, Prince William?
BONUS: “The A Team” crooner Ed Sheeran, who topped the “Worst Dressed” category, took to Twitter to express his displeasure with the magazine’s choices. Enjoy!
You tell ’em, Ed. Who are your favorite best-dressed Brits?
The war is over, but intrigue, crisis, romance, and change still grip the beloved estate.
