Still searching for a New Year’s Eve outfit? PopStyle is here to help! From a black tie affair to a night on the couch, TV costume designers show you how to dress for any occasion.

We swooned when Barney proposed to Robin (Cobie Smulders) — but that was partly because Robin, who has made some questionable fashion choices in the past, looked so stunning in Monique Lhuillier.

Costume designer Reiko Kurumada told EW that the second she saw the sequined red gown, she knew it was The One. “That specific dress was perfect for the engagement scene. We didn’t want to take away from that very special, poignant moment between Barney and Robin, while still illustrating Robin’s classic, timeless, natural beauty,” she said. “The dress is so elegantly simple, while still making the style impact we wanted by the gorgeous color and delicate bead work.”

Looking for a dress that will inspire the man in your life to drop to one knee this New Year’s Eve?

Unfortunately, Monique Lhuillier reps tell us the gown — which was part of the designer’s Fall 2012 runway collection — is sold out, but Kurumada suggests recreating Robin’s style with a simple maxi dress in a bright holiday color. We spotted this crimson halter gown inspired by a look from the 2012 Primetime Emmys ($149.55 at

Robin kept warm in an Alice + Olivia coat,  Kurumada says that a shawl collar cardigan ($69.50 at will also do the trick.
