All eyes were on Megan Draper (Jessica Paré) when she serenaded her husband with “Zou Bisou Bisou.” Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant helped create the memorable moment when she dressed the character in a sultry cocktail dress.
“It was really the first time the audience has seen a mini on Mad Men, so it was important for the scene to be all about her,” Bryant told EW of Megan’s vintage dress, which she borrowed from Hollywood’s Costume Rentals Corporation. “I made the bell shape [sleeves] bigger so they would be more dramatic for dancing.”
Want to be the center of attention this New Year’s Eve? Read on to get Bryant’s tips for recreating Megan Draper’s ultra-sexy look.
“Find a little black chiffon dress. If it doesn’t have rhinestone details like the one Megan wore, add a little embellishment with a rhinestone necklace and a pair of cuff bracelets,” Bryant says. Notte by Marchesa’s full-sleeve cocktail dress ($450 at neimanmarcus.com) has the perfect bell sleeves, while ASOS offers a more affordable option that comes with built-in bling ($43.98 at asos.com).
Next, “add fishnets and a shoe with rhinestone detail,” suggests Bryant. “It’s not about a big platform stiletto, it is really about a square toe and a square 2-inch heel.” The AK Anne Klein Fenton pump ($54.95 at dsw.com) has the right heel height and a cushioned insoles, so you can dance well past midnight.
Finish off the retro look with an oversized cocktail ring, a mini bouffant and winged eyeliner (click here to get the how-to on Lena Dunham’s Twiggy-inspired hair and makeup) and voila! You’re ready to welcome 2013 with a little “Zou Bisou Bisou.”
