It was no surprise that Les Misérables made the cut when The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences narrowed down the field of contenders for this year’s Academy Award in the Makeup and Hairstyling category.

Those elements have “got to really tell the story, it’s got to be brutal,” says the film’s hair and makeup designer, Lisa Westcott, who oversaw everything from Hugh Jackman’s beard extensions to Anne Hathaway’s bloody teeth and buzz cut, and the ever-changing disguises of Monsieur and Madame Thénardier (Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter).
