Shooting two movies in one day
Just how in-demand is Oyelowo? ”I literally had a 24-hour period last year where I was with Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis by day [shooting Lincoln] in Richmond, Virginia, and then Tom Cruise sent a private jet for me because he needed me to shoot a piece of the car chase in Jack Reacher that night in Pittsburgh,” says the Oxford-born actor, 36. ”It was a pretty special day.”

Meeting an idol
Oyelowo (pronounced oh-yellow-oh) has trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and the Royal Shakespeare Company. But even he was stunned by Day-Lewis’ level of immersion on the set of Lincoln.

”I didn’t really get to meet Daniel as Daniel,” he says. ”I had a very surreal moment between shots where Daniel, Steven, and I were warming our hands around a heater. For five minutes straight we didn’t say a word. And all I wanted to say was ‘My Left Foot!’ I remember watching that film and being so blown away by Daniel’s performance, and now here we are just chilling in silence.”

Next up
Oyelowo will star opposite Zoë Saldana in the Nina Simone biopic Nina and Oprah Winfrey in Lee Daniels’ White House-set period drama The Butler.
