Any big fan of Pedro Almodóvar can respect the absolutely expansive, colorful scope of his work, and now the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is honoring the Spanish Oscar-winning filmmaker with a retrospective Dec. 13 in London.

Friends, family and others including Agustín Almodóvar, Stephen Frears, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alberto Iglesias, Peter Morgan, and Sally Potter will be in attendance at the Curzon Soho Cinema invitation-only event, “An Academy Tribute to Pedro Almodóvar,” announced the Academy on Tuesday.

Almodóvar has always filled his movies with drama, vibrant backdrops, deep emotion and intensely strong women characters, from 1988’s feisty Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown to 2006’s Volver, starring Penelope Cruz, to last year’s The Skin I Live In (in that case, a man physically altered into being a woman). He won the best original screenplay Oscar in 2003 for the comedic drama Talk to Her.
