It’s the Sharks vs. the Jets, with a 2012 twist.

Members of the British boy bands The Wanted and One Direction got into it this past week. But instead of Jeté-ing across recording studios, the members went the much more efficient but boring route of Living Like They Were Young by engaging in a ridiculous celebrity Twitter feud.

It all started when One Direction’s Zayn Malik tweeted at The Wanted’s Max George. George had written, “Psy and me getting messy #geekandproud,”which “forced” Malik to write, “The first step is totally acceptance. #geekoftheweek. You display just how much of a wannabe you are. : )”

I would interpret the above to a little friendly ribbing, but alas. I’m not a boy bander, so perhaps I don’t understand just how much these are fighting words. It certainly didn’t end there.

Burn! One Direction sings pop tunes, y’all.

From there, the insults were free-flying as the duo’s respective bandmates had to weigh in. Tom Parker of The Wanted and Louis Tomlinson of One Direction (Phew. It’s hard to keep all the well-coiffed bad boys straight!) started an offshoot Twitter war, where they also lobbed insults at each other, all the while George and Malik were still going strong:

That particular put-down was RTed by over 84,000 people, presumably mostly impressionable teen girls. Because, yes, while this fight was going on, their fans were also picking sides.

George and Malik ended things by getting a little R-rated:

Whoa, there. Aren’t their fans like 14?

Man. *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys would never.
