Ever since 2008’s Hellboy II, Guillermo Del Toro has made a busy career out of promising to make all sorts of interesting movies: The Hobbit, At the Mountains of Madness, Frankenstein, Slaughterhouse-Five, even a new adaptation of the Disney theme park ride The Haunted Mansion. His first actual movie in five years, though, will finally hit theaters next summer. Pacific Rim earned good buzz at Comic-Con, but the mega-monster movie has been mostly kept away from the prying eyes of the public. However, if you happen to find yourself at the official website of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, you’ll discover that the movie’s viral marketing campaign is already in full swing. There’s not too much there just yet: A timer counting down to a date two weeks away, plus a video which claims to be a test of the “Kaiju Emergency Alert System.” Also, spooky sounds. ComingSoon also has a PDF of a letter written by “James Botham, Marshal of the Great Britain Air Command” to “Lt. Col Takada,” featuring lots of implicit hints about the threat of Kaiju.

And what are Kaiju, you ask? Well, a just-posted video claims to be a news report. The headline of said report: “Giant Creature” Attacks San Francisco. Watch now and start counting the minutes until Pacific Rim‘s release:
