Guess who’s putting the Christmas lights up on his pineapple under the sea already. Why Spongebob, of course. The little squarepants-clad yellow guy has a half-hour stop-motion special called It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! airing on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m., and featuring John Goodman as Santa Claus. It was inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass specials (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town) and the 2009 SpongeBob song, “Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas),” co-written by Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob) and Andy Paley.

After the jump we’ve got a very musical peek at some of the animation with this trailer, which involves SpongeBob’s enthusiastic singing of “Santa Has His Eyes on Me” and a predictably harebrained moment from Patrick.

In It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!, Plankton turns everybody in Bikini Bottom from nice to naughty by feeding them his special jerktonium-laced fruitcake all in an effort to get his Christmas wish–the Krabby Patty formula. The Nickelodeon premiere will also include bonus scenes featuring a stop-motion version of another Tom Kenny-voiced character “Patchy.”
