The minions of Despicable Me will be getting their own feature film spin-off in 2014, but if the new teaser trailer for next summer’s Despicable Me 2 is any indication, the pill-shaped, electric yellow henchmen of Steve Carell’s not-quite-nefarious Gru will also play a major role in the official sequel to the 2010 animated hit. Much of the clip features two of the minions goofing off after putting Gru’s three adopted daughters to bed — it seems “putt putt” means the same thing in English as it does in Minion-ese. But when they investigate a mysterious sound in their backyard, things take a decidedly otherworldly turn. Check it out below:

So, aliens? Or are we just supposed to think it’s aliens? Perhaps another of Gru’s supervillain nemeses is desperate for his own spin-off movie and thinks his best ticket is to steal away Gru’s scene-stealing minions and pin it on E.T.? Or maybe I’m over-thinking this. Anyway, what did you make of this teaser? Do you think Gru will be able to handle life without his minions?

Despicable Me 2 arrives July 3, 2013.
