Ruby Sparks (2012, R)

Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan A frustrated novelist (Dano) writes about his dream girl — and thinks he’s going insane when she comes to life. Kazan, who wrote the refreshingly original screenplay, is fantastic as the titular girlfriend who’s much more than a malleable fantasy. (Also on iTunes) B+

Gone in 60 Seconds (1974, R)

H.B. Halicki, Marion Busia If you only know the 2000 remake starring Angelina Jolie, do yourself a favor and check out the gritty original, now available in an extras-packed DVD/Blu-ray combo. What’s not to love about a car-heist flick with a 40-minute rubber-to-the-road chase scene? B+

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012, R)

Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass As a cynical magazine intern, Plaza is a standout in this uneven indie about a supermarket worker (Duplass) seeking a partner for a time-travel mission. (Also on iTunes) B

Take This Waltz (2012, R)

Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen In writer-director Sarah Polley’s grown-up drama, Williams is wonderful as always as a happily married woman who falls in love with another man. (Also on iTunes) B

Coming Soon
360 (2012, R)

Rachel Weisz, Jude Law Fernando Meirelles’ multinarrative shape-shifter of a film tracks a dozen characters through as many cities around the world. B 11/6

Sunset Boulevard (1950, PG)

Gloria Swanson, William Holden Norma Desmond is ready for her close-up — finally on crisp Blu-ray. A 11/6
