When you throw a tennis ball into the swimming pool for your dog to fetch, you never get to see what your dog is up to below the surface. In Underwater Dogs (out today), a book of 89 portraits of diving canines, photographer Seth Casteel has captured the “chaotic ballet of bared teeth and bubbles, paddling paws, fur and ears billowing in the currents.”

Not all of these photos are cute. Some of the submerged models are hardly recognizable as dogs — they look like predatory sea monsters, and some are almost dinosaur-like. But the gorgeous, energetic snapshots are special in that they capture our pets in a primal state we rarely get to see.

Take a peek at ten water-loving breeds from Underwater Dogs!
