Along with the news that Shailene Woodley will likely be dying her hair red to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — and that she’ll be joined by an as yet unnamed hottie playing Peter Parker’s best friend Harry Osborn — we learned yesterday that director Marc Webb and his fellow collaborators are circling Electro as the sequel’s possible Big Bad.

This isn’t exactly shocking news (pun unfortunately intended). The after-credits sequence for The Amazing Spider-Man featured a man (played by character actor Michael Massee), clad in a black coat, sporting a black fedora, whose presence is presaged by flashes of lightning. In the Spidey comics, Electro, a.k.a. Maxwell “Max” Dillon, is an electrical engineer who becomes able to control electricity after he’s struck by, yup, lightning.

The character is somewhat unusual in the Spidey canon, as he interacts with a great number of other Marvel characters, including Howard Stark, Magneto, Daredevil, and the Fantastic Four. Maybe it’s because the character is essentially what Nick Nolte became at the end of Ang Lee’s mesmerizingly awful Hulk, but I have a hard time getting excited about a character who wouldn’t really physically fight Spider-Man so much as just, you know, zap him a lot.

Nothing has been set in stone yet, however, so Electro could very well be zapped out of the running for the ultimate baddie of Amazing Spider-Man 2. Perhaps the producers go back to the beginning, and embrace Spider-Man’s very first enemy: The face-changing Chameleon. Personally, I’d love to see Venom get a better depiction than his afterthought treatment in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 — he’s the one Spidey baddie that genuinely scares the crap out of me every time I see him, as opposed to seeming like a kinda cartoony costumed scoundrel. Or perhaps the fact that we’ll see Harry Osborn means we’ll also meet his mysterious, possibly dying father Norman Osborn en route to his transformation into the Green Goblin.

What do you think? Are you stoked for Electro, or is there some other member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery you’d like to see on screen?
