Quentin Tarantino's new 'Django Unchained' trailer aims for funnybone
Somehow, Quentin Tarantino knows how to make us laugh at things that aren’t funny.
Case in point: the new trailer for Django Unchained, which features our first look at Jonah Hill as part of a pre-Ku Klux Klan group known as The Regulators, who are out to cause trouble for the freed slave played by Jamie Foxx and his bounty hunter friend Dr. King Schultz (Inglourious Basterds scene-stealer Christoph Waltz.)
“Anyone bring any extra bags?” Hill’s horseman asks a crowd of his masked fellow riders.
What’s a racist to do if his eyeholes aren’t properly cut?
Much of the footage in the new trailer is what we’ve seen before, but the tone this time is more humorous than bad-ass, although there has always been plenty of each in Tarantino’s work.
In addition to Hill, we also get to see more of Samuel L. Jackson’s sinister house slave, who collaborates with his wicked boss against the two gunmen.
There’s a lot of disturbing imagery in this trailer for the southern-fried revenge saga, particularly Leonardo DiCaprio’s sadistic plantation owner manhandling his “property,” the frightened slave Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who happens to be Django’s lost wife.
Again, Tarantino has always given us vile, despicable characters who nonetheless find ways to make us laugh — particularly when they get what’s coming to them.
