On April 2, 2011, the dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem played their final concert to a packed house at Madison Square Garden. It was no surprise that the show was epic (they’d been doing this for a while). More confounding was why frontman James Murphy was calling it quits at the peak of the band’s success. That’s the riddle at the center of Shut Up and Play the Hits (2012, 1 hr., 45 mins., Not Rated) — a terrific, intimate, and occasionally precious mix of clips from the live show and a behind-the-scenes look at an artist grappling with his responsibility to his fans and himself.
