Nickelodeon renews 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' for second season
Nickelodeon’s rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles only premiered last weekend, but the series has already been renewed for a second season.
The network announced that it would be ordering 26 more episodes of the cartoon, which pleased Nickelodeon over the weekend with notably high ratings. Nick plans to air the second season next year, though no specific premiere date has been set.
It’s easy to see why the new TMNT series was renewed so quickly: Last Saturday’s series premiere ranked as the top telecast among viewers aged 2 to 11 (6.2/2.1 million), particularly boys aged 6-11 (8.2/837,000). Additionally, it gained Nick’s highest ratings for boys aged 2-11 of the year so far (7.5/1.3 million). Overall, the premiere drew 3.9 million total viewers, making it the week’s top-rated cable program for kids.
And, of course, the franchise brings more than ratings. Toys R’ Us has already put the Nickelodeon-branded Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Secret Sewer Lair Playset on its 2012 Holiday Hot Toy list, and Time to Play has placed TMNT figures on its Holiday Most Wanted list as well.
