The American Idol auditions were disrupted Tuesday after two new judges on the show engaged in a contentious fight on the panel.

In a video obtained by TMZ (below), rapper Nicki Minaj curses out pop singer Mariah Carey at a stop in Charlotte, N.C. The audio makes the conversation difficult to understand, but according to one translation, Minaj shouts, “I told them, I’m not f–kin’ putting up with her f–kin’ highness over there.”

The site claims the fight was over a contestant’s performance and that Minaj threatened to “knock out” Carey, but that’s not confirmed. Another site claims Carey started the fight by “making jabs” at Minaj. Arguably, the best part is fellow newcomer judge Keith Urban looking rather trapped sitting between them.

Carey and Minaj, along with Urban and Randy Jackson, have been judging Idol auditions since Sept. 16. Rumors of fighting between Carey and Minaj sprung up less than 24 hours after auditions started, which the two attempted to dismiss. Minaj reportedly said the new judges are “getting along wonderfully.” While Carey joked to reporters, “How can you feud in two days? I think a feud takes a little longer [to build].”

Looks like it’s pretty built up now.

Fox had no comment, but we gotta wonder: Who shot the footage? TV series crew members don’t normally whip out their cell phone cameras to capture backstage fighting. Everything we’re hearing tonight points to this fight being real, but when it’s reality TV, it’s healthy to remain a little skeptical. After all, it’s not like this headline is going to make viewers less likely to watch Idol in January.

UPDATE: Idol host Ryan Seacrest confirmed the fight on his radio show Wednesday morning: “There was a very heated, intense argument towards the end of the day after a contestant did a little bit of a performance in the room … It did go too far, to the point where the producers said with just a few more contestants left, ‘Let’s call it a day.'” Here’s more on Seacrest’s comments.
