The Kinks, ”Waterloo Sunset”

”It’s an achingly beautiful story [about] loneliness and detachment and watching the world go ’round. My car right now is jammed with Kinks; it’s just Kinks all the time. I’m going crazy for the Kinks. [Laughs]”

Hollie Cook, ”Walking in the Sand”

”She’s the daughter of the Sex Pistols drummer. It’s classic reggae, so catchy and groovy. It makes you feel like having a rum on the rocks.”

Elbow, ”Jesus is a Rochdale Girl”

”I looked it up, and the songwriter said that when he was 22, he lost his faith in the idea that God was real. So the only thing he really believed in was his girlfriend; she was his new Jesus. He put all of his faith in her, and of course she dumped him.”

Wings, ”Silly Love Songs”

”I used to put my little Panasonic tape recorder next to the radio, wait for them to play this, hit ‘record,’ then hit ‘pause’ and wait for them to play it again until I had it five or six times. Then I would go to sleep with it under my pillow. It just made me feel so good.”
