Are there seriously still people who don’t think women are funny? Apparently, according to Deadline Hollywood — where editor Nikki Finke went on a short rant after Julie Bowen won her second Emmy last Sunday. But Finke didn’t dismiss her entire gender’s comedy chops; instead, her harsh words were reserved specifically for “beautiful women”:

Finke tacked on a sentence about how her theory “applies to handsome men as well.” Still, it’s her remarks about ladies that have struck a chord — especially with Elizabeth Banks, a great comedic actress who also happens to be beautiful. The 30 Rock vet responded to Finke’s comments on her own blog, pasting her rebuttal beneath photos of Tina Fey and Sofia Vergara at this year’s Emmys.

“Wouldn’t it be great if older, more experienced women like Ms. Finke were kinder to her fellow females in the entertainment business?” Banks began. She went on to note that her new movie Pitch Perfect “features women of every size and stripe and is utterly hilarious. The best part is: it is obvious they are all beautiful. And 30 Rock’s Kay Cannon, who happens to be a gorgeous woman with a wicked sense of humor, wrote it.”

Furthermore, says Banks, while humiliation can be funny, “it is not a state of being reserved solely for the ugly, whatever that means to Nikki Finke.” Proof: Vergara suffered from a wardrobe malfunction right before her series won Best Comedy, and Banks herself “walked out of the bathroom with toilet paper on my shoe just this morning.”

Game, set, and match? Probably not. So for now, let’s talk among ourselves: Do you think pretty people — especially of the female persuasion — can be funny?
