You couldn’t have scripted it better. NBC has just ordered a pilot based on the too-wacky-to-be-true life of Ali Wentworth — as recounted in her hilarious memoir Ali in Wonderland — from Bill Lawrence (Cougar Town, Scrubs). In the book, she writes about growing up under the thumb of her WASPy, politically connected mother, Muffie Cabot. She went on to dabble in sketch comedy, drugs, and dysfunctional relationships until she married Good Morning America‘s George Stephanopoulos and later worked with Oprah Winfrey and Meryl Streep. Now Wentworth, who starred on In Living Color and in the infamous ”Soup Nazi” episode of Seinfeld (Schmoopy!), is pondering who should play her colorful mother. ”I would say Shirley MacLaine, she would say Helen Mirren.” Unfortunately, there’s no hope that the TV-ready couple would ever play themselves. ”We would be divorced,” she says.
