Nick at Nite's 'See Dad Run': Exclusive photos and premiere date
On Nick at Nite’s upcoming show See Dad Run, David Hobbs (Scott Baio) switches parenting roles with his wife, becoming the stay-at-home dad as his wife returns to work. But the switcheroo is no normal feat for this entertainment business family. David was the perfect TV dad on a family sitcom for 10 years, and he quickly finds that fathering without a script is not all that easy.
See Dad Run — Nick at Nite’s first original live-action comedy series — takes the actor back to the same stage on the Paramount lot where he shot Happy Days from 1977 to 1984. Alanna Ubach (Legally Blonde, Meet the Fockers) plays David’s wife, who’s returning to her life as a soap opera star; their kids are played by Ryan Newman (Disney XD’s Zeke and Luther), Jackson Brundage (One Tree Hill) and Bailey Michelle Brown (Paranormal Activity 3). EW has an exclusive first look at a promo shot of the family below:
While on-site for the promo photo shoot last month, Baio told EW, “Without [the writers] knowing it, [the show] is pretty much based on my life.”
Baio, father of a four-year-old daughter, has passed on examples from his actor-dad life to creators Tina Albanese and Patrick Labyorteaux and the show’s other writers, which have led to scenes in the show.
“Everybody’s job changes them to a certain extent, and my job changed me in ways that were good and some bad, so I was able to apply a lot of it [to See Dad Run],” said Baio, who is also an executive producer on the show.
During the photo shoot, it was clear that the TV family had started to feel like a real family. Six-year-old Brown was constantly hugging Ubach’s leg, and all three kids got their groove on together to Katy Perry and Maroon 5 for the photographers.
Newman, who plays the oldest child, Emily, is the youngest of two in real life but has enjoyed being the oldest of three in the fictional family. “I love being like a big sister to the two of them,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to be the big sister.” Newman added that she and Bailey play Go Fish during downtime on set and has gotten together with Brundage off-set to go bowling.
Newman and Brundage also found ways to pass the time with their co-star Mark Curry, who plays Marcus, the head writer for David’s now-canceled sitcom. During the photo shoot, both young actors played hand-clapping games with Curry. Check out a behind-the-scenes photo of the moment below.
“The kids are so talented,” Curry said. “Jackson is so funny. He reminds me of John Candy or somebody. He’s got that comedic timing.”
EW can exclusively report that See Dad Run will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m., with a special preview of the pilot airing on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. The half-hour series will continue airing on Sundays at 8 p.m.
