When actor Kal Penn revealed in 2009 that he was leaving Hollywood for a job in the White House, a nation scratched its head. “Really?” it asked, pausing to take a slurp from a country-sized Big Gulp. “The stoner from Harold & Kumar, working with Obama? How did that happen?”

Questions aside, Penn’s stint as the Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement seems to have gone well. He’s held onto the post for three years, minus a few months spent filming A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas in 2010. And now Penn will be hosting coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Sept. 6 — provided he can ditch the bong long enough to remember to show up.
