Comedian Jeffrey Ross aimed to offend at this weekend’s taping of the Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne, but the network has decided to cut his most controversial joke from the airing of the show, EW confirms.

Ross used last month’s shooting in Aurora, Colo. as comic fodder during his time at the podium, comparing red-headed fellow roaster Seth Green to accused shooter James Holmes, then adding, “I’m kidding! You’re not like James Holmes. At least he’s doing something in a movie theater that people remember.”

The roasts always have to be edited for time, fitting into a 90-minute special what took about three hours to tape — but even for the cable network, cuts traditionally are also made to keep the most vulgar and offensive of jokes off the air.
