Mary Murphy on 'SYTYCD': The first cut of the season
Mary Murphy is blogging for EW.com this season of So You Think You Can Dance!
The first cut is always the hardest, but as you know we have to whittle our way down to only two champions this season. It would be great if everyone could stay, but even though we are enjoying great artists, this is a competition. I found it interesting who did not receive enough votes to stay out of danger, but let’s talk about some of the numbers first.
Sonya was the talk of the show and was right on point. Her first number starring Will and Amelia was mesmerizing. With the weight of the world on their shoulders, I felt their struggle and internal turmoil throughout the entire piece. Of course, it was all in their own style and it was exquisite. Sonya’s other piece starred Matthew and Audrey. For two of the smaller contestants, they pack a serious punch! Nobody can say they don’t use their bodies to the fullest extent – they are certainly a dream team.
OK, the Argentine tango is extremely difficult and I was so impressed by Amber, who was dancing outside of her style. Nick was at home doing the tango, and proved to be the perfect partner! Bravo Miriam and Leonardo!
Two of the most adorable dancers had a bit of a hard time with hip hop. I thought they did it very well and was cute, but it didn’t grab any of the judges. The level of competition is so high this season that even “good” may not be good enough. Leaving the show were four amazing dancers. Losing Alexa and Daniel was sad for me because I felt given just a little more time, they really could have popped. Jayna and Nick both had a good night with their partners, but an overwhelming amount of votes went to save Chehon and Whitney. The fact is, the reality of dancers going home has set in. This group has been together off and on since April and a genuine care has developed between them. Now their friends are going home, so the cuts will be more difficult each week. But as we celebrate the work that the choreographers and dancers give us, I look forward to each week as magic often happens on that stage.
Stepping off for now…
