A decade and a half before he created TV’s ER, doctor-turned-writer-director Michael Crichton served up a far more paranoid take on the medical profession in Coma (1978, PG, 1 hr., 53 mins.). Just out on Blu-ray, the bone-chilling conspiracy thriller stars Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold as bickering lovers and hotshot Boston physicians who uncover a rash of operating-room mishaps that leave a high number of otherwise healthy patients in comas. Bujold, tense and thin-skinned, begins to snoop around when bodies disappear from her hospital. What she discovers will make you think twice about ever stepping inside one again. B+
