Neil Young Journeys

PG, 1 HR., 27 MINS.

Six years after Neil Young: Heart of Gold, Jonathan Demme has directed another Young concert movie — but where that one was lyrical and communal, this one is almost punishingly stripped down. Young, filmed at Toronto’s Massey Hall during the final two performances of his 2011 solo tour, sings old numbers and new, accompanying himself with raggedy electric-guitar chords. His voice can still soar into the lovely-lonely stratosphere, but he has basically reinvented his songs as scratchy basement-tape demos. A little of that goes a long way. C
