He showed up to receive a Golden Popcorn (not to mention deliver a killer performance with the Black Keys) at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, but when it came to the annual CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards in New York City last night, the audience had to settle for watching Johnny Depp accept his Fashion Icon honor via video.

Luckily, the designers and actors who walked the red carpet had plenty to say. “I think his style is fabulous,” said Girls’ Zosia Mamet. “That’s sort of what I would strive for. Something very consistent and unique but super simple. Somehow I feel like he always just looks classic.” She was one of the many stars who lauded the actor for his individuality, while CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg chose to use just a single word: “Hot!”

Here’s how the rest of the fashion crowd described Depp’s style:

Jessica Chastain

“He’s so cool. He’s someone who kind of creates his own convention, doesn’t he? He doesn’t just follow the rules, he makes the rules.”

Padma Lakshmi

“Eyeliner. One bath less a week. A few braids. And killer charisma.”

Busy Phillips

“Eclectic. I love him.”

Cynthia Rowley

“Hot. Can I just say hot? It’s very personal and I think that he doesn’t change. He’s his own man, so I admire that.”

Sophia Bush

“I think Johnny Depp is incredibly eclectic and very true to himself and I think that’s what makes great fashion. You don’t have to stay within the lines, you can be abstract and make a masterpiece and he’s a good example of that.”

Gabe Saporta

“He used to play in bands so he’s kind of like a rock and roll dude. He’s like ‘F— it, I guess I got to dress up a little bit.’ So he, like, does it, he wears nice things but it’s very effortless.”

Rachel Zoe

“Eccentric, rugged, like, masculine. Sometimes costumey. Very kind of worn in and never trying too hard. Very effortless but always cool. He’s perfect.”

Zac Posen

“Well, his style has evolved hugely but I think that there’s definitely a worldly quality to [him]. It definitely has an artistic nonchalance to it. And he’s created the mystery of his look and the character. I love people who self-create.”

Tommy Hilfiger (Recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award)

“I like the pirates. I think that’s a cool style. I almost wore my pirate costume, but I decided he’s getting his style award, I didn’t want to rain on the parade.”

What do you think? Is Johnny Depp deserving of a Fashion Icon award?
