Though the plot of Anchorman II is still just an evolving idea in the delightfully delirious minds of Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, the return of Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 news team will take an enormous step towards reality tonight when a teaser for the 2013 sequel debuts in front of The Dictator. Filming the top-secret minute-long clip “was like the Manhattan Project — except without the possibility of destroying all of mankind,” writes McKay, in an e-mail. The teaser reintroduces Burgundy and his news team, and McKay writes that reuniting the gang was an afternoon delight. (No, not that “Afternoon Delight.”)

“Paramount came to us with the idea of the teaser, and since we’re writing the script, it was a good chance to see the characters and hang out with the actors to inspire writing,” the director writes. “All of the actors (Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner) slipped right into character and they all looked amazing. Paul has a beard and we’re thinking of keeping it. Kind of an Eddie Rabbit-meets-Serpico look.”

Don’t bother scanning the teaser for clues about the sequel’s plot, though McKay writes they have ruled a few things out: “Nothing’s set. Right now I can say for sure there is no Ghost Rider cameo or a scene where Ron fights a wolverine on a nose-diving helicopter. We’re either going to shoot the movie in 3-D or 1/2 D.”

No on-fire immortals. No vicious, airborne mustelid. Interesting… This gang is never afraid to paint itself into a corner!
