Ryan Murphy's gay family comedy gets NBC series order
NBC has given a series order to a comedy from Glee creator Ryan Murphy that introduces a whole new modern family.
The network has greenlit The New Normal, described as a “heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help them have children.” The show is created by Murphy and fellow Glee producer Allison Adler. Justin Bartha, Bebe Wood and Ellen Barkin star in the show.
The network was considering two projects about a gay couple with children this year. The other concept starred Sean Hayes and is not expected to move forward.
The order follows NBC giving a Matthew Perry comedy pilot an early pickup last week — Go On, about a charming sportscaster who attends therapy after a personal tragedy. Today’s order, however, really marks the start of the firing pistol of what will be an intense couple weeks of orders, renewals and cancellations. EW.com will provide full coverage.
